“Are You Saying It Was Sabotage?!”
The THIMUN Thread tackles the accusations of plagiarism that plagued GA3.
In the closing hours of the second day, a shocking turn of events occurred when cries of suspected plagiarism rang out from GA3— wild accusations running around. The scandal soon got the attention of the THIMUN thread, making for a particularly spectacular end to a hectic day and grabbing the curiosity of all ears.
Just a few hours prior, the delegate of Paraguay had attempted to table a resolution by the delegate of Switzerland. He even sent notes to all delegates advocating for the resolution to be tabled. When claims of intentional sabotage were thrown around, it seemed that there would be no end to the GA3 shenanigans. Despite the chaos of the morning, the committee would up the ante once more, uncovering suspected plagiarism, and sending the room into a chaotic frenzy.
When asked for the committee’s thoughts on the matter, the delegate of Iran from GA3 remarked “We’re in the thick of it”, an indication of the stir the allegations had caused. Some had felt that justice had been served, with bitter tastes of Paraguay’s attempts at getting Switzerland’s resolution tabled lingering when the affair came to light. On the other hand, delegations namely Paraguay and his allies, scrambled to find out how such a discrepancy could have occurred and to correct it in short order.
Paraguay was adamant that the plagiarism accusations were false. “I literally wrote a speech against it; why would I add to my resolution?” Questions of sabotage and foul play continued to circulate as the committee anxiously waited for the secretariats’ ruling.
Was it perhaps an honest mistake, or maybe malicious intent? As for what the President of the General Assembly had to say “Don’t get caught.” Her remarks on the situation were simple and frank, indicating a flexible interpretation of the situation. The official stance is that there was no plagiarism and the committee is to move on with the debate, although the secretariat’s results were met with some eye rolls. Either way, it seems there’s no correct way to view the situation, and it’s all up to interpretation from here. Whether one believes that Paraguay had been able to hide a malicious plot to undermine the rest of the committee or just an honest mistake he hadn’t realised, or just about anything in between.
