As our planet rapidly warms up, it seems that the fragile peace in our world could become stressed by climate change. Many nations in the world lack the economic ability or real estate to switch their nations onto renewable energy, and as the world starts to feel the heat, it’s now up to GA6 to ensure that conflicts don’t begin to brew around the world.
The delegate of China’s resolution advocated for resources to be allocated to underdeveloped countries, while trying to keep the switch more gradual by retaining fossil fuels in order to ensure that nations can still fall back on non- renewable energy.
In a heartwarming move of collaboration, the United States, the Russian Federation, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) were all listed as co-submitters on China’s resolution, a heartening reminder of our ability to band together in the face of adversity.
The resolution has also proposed providing refuge for those affected by climate change in response to the hundreds of thousands across the world that have lost their homes to natural disasters caused by climate change. Furthermore, UN peacekeepers can be provided to ensure that conflict does not break out in the wake of extreme weather events, ensuring that nations do not fall into instability or civil war following natural disasters caused by global warming.
Realistic estimates about how the switch to green energy could go were made, implementing solutions that facilitate a middle ground, where green energy and fossil fuels are used in conjunction with each other while fossil fuels are gradually phased out and reliance on them is minimised. Resources will be spread out to help less economically developed countries (LEDCs), and long term solutions fostered, building a stronger plan to tackle the climate crisis.
The delegate of China faced a gauntlet of questions, with many delegates seeking to ensure the solutions were favourable for all, whilst expressing their support for China’s vision of keeping the peace while fighting the ill effects of climate change. Many amendments were made to polish the resolution’s rough edges, but approval from the council remained steadfast, demonstrating the strength of the resolution.
Sharing of resources, assistance for those displaced by global warming, and taking small steps into the green future. Given the mutually beneficial clauses China has proposed, it comes as little surprise that the resolution passed, bringing our world ever closer to stability and sustainability.
