THIMUN Through the Years
A look back at how it all started and the milestones that shaped its legacy.
The Hague Model United Nations (THIMUN) conference has a legacy worthy of a chapter in the history books. During its tenure, it has welcomed visits from the Secretary-General to Royalty to the thousands of student participants who have made, and continue to make the conference what it is. Below, find a brief recount of the most notable moments in THIMUN history, and here is to decades more.
1968: Founded By Paul Smith with the American School of the Hauge, THIMUN had very humble beginnings as a small school conference in the Netherlands.
1981: The THIMUN Foundation was established and authority was transferred to a Board of Directors. It is still run by a Board today!
2002: THIMUN was visited by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. A year later, the Foundation was awarded Roster Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
2004: Under the THIMUN foundation, the inaugural THIMUN Singapore was held at the Hwa Chong Institution.
2018: THIMUN celebrated its 50th anniversary with King William-Alexander.
2021: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, THIMUN was held completely online via a custom platform.
